Sawadee in da JC

Sawadee is my newest obsession. Located in the heart of downtown Jersey City (just a block and a half off the Grove Street PATH), Sawadee is some of the most amazing Thai food I have ever eaten offered in a surprisingly chic atmosphere.

We started with the Thai Coconut Shrimp which were crunch with a subtle essence of coconut but not so much so that it overwhelmed the shrimp. The shrimp inside were perfectly tender and sweet. The dish is drizzled with a sweet honey coconut reduction perfect for adding just a hint of extra sweetness if that's what you like. Next up, my absolute favorite dish du jour- the Chicken and Tomato Curry. Boneless skinless chicken breast is sliced thin and served along side stewed tomatoes and sauteed onions all slathered with the most amazing coconut curry I have ever tasted. There is a medium amount of heat, just enough to balance the sweet and rich coconut based curry. The curry is light on the tongue and a beautiful complement to the steamed white rice served along side. My husband opts for the Chicken Pad Thai which proves to be the exact right ratio of noodles to protein all the while chock full of fresh bean sprouts, carrots, onions, and crushed peanuts.Top it off with a bit of chopped cilantro and a squeeze of fresh lime juice and this Pad Thai knocks your socks off. You can adjust the level of spice to suit your threshold on this dish which is an added bonus.

All of the dishes at Sawadee range between $12-$20 and the portions are more than ample. The food is cooked to perfection and service never disappoints. Sawadee also offers quite the happy hour Monday thru Friday from 5-7 with 2 for one specialty martinis (try the Lychee) and Asian beers (Singha is the favorite here).

Sawadee is my new favorite restaurant on the West side of the Hudson. Their exotic ambiance, stellar service and spot on authentic Thai cuisine bring a much needed bit of sass and class to downtown Jersey City. Stop by next time you are in the neighborhood and see for yourself!
